From Roof to Booth: Our Fitout for Mix’d Cocktail Bar

There’s something new in Ahuriri – and we’re thrilled to be part of it.

Mix’d Cocktail Bar brings a vibrant new vibe, creative cocktails, and a breezy atmosphere to the Ahuriri waterfront. Located right next to The Boardwalk, this exciting new venue promises all the good stuff in a space that’s as stylish as it is inviting.

Douglas Innovation was stoked to collaborate with the builder on two major elements of the fitout: the Retractable Roof and some comfy and eye-catching custom booth seating upholstery.

Both of these features were designed and made to elevate the atmosphere while staying practical for all-weather comfort.

The Retractable Roof

To make the most of the stunning location, the Mix’d team wanted a roof that could adapt to changing weather while keeping the outdoor feel alive. Our solution was a trendy Retractable Roof, professionally installed by our in-house team to provide flexible cover without compromising on style.

Perfect for hospitality spaces, the Retractable Roof opens to let in sky and sunlight, and closes to provide fully waterproof, UV-protected shelter – keeping guests, seats, and cocktails comfortably covered, whatever the weather. This roof is ideal for creating an all-seasons space, particularly when combined with outdoor screens or blinds.  In Mix’d’s case, the builders worked in their own glazed screens to fit with the roof and space.

For this project, the roof spans an sizable 5.8 metres x 10.7 metres, showing how well these systems suit larger outdoor spaces. And when the sun goes down, built-in LED lighting keeps the atmosphere glowing well into the night.

With the touch of a button, Mix’d can shift the vibe – sunshine, shade, or shelter – on demand.

Upholstery Street Cred: Behind the Booths

After initiating the roof project, our upholstery team were also invited to help bring the builder’s custom curved seating plans to life.

Using a mix of upholstery techniques, our tradespeople used over 50 metres of gorgeous green fabric to make a total of 98 bolsters, plus the custom curved squab seating, all of which needed to flow beautifully with the shape of the venue.

For the cushions, working with Warwick Fabrics’ Macrosuede in ‘Spruce’ was a pleasure. Each bolster was cut, shaped, and stitched in-house, then padded with Nexus high-resilience foam to keep things comfy night after night.

Plush, modern, and made to last, these seats are designed to be more than just somewhere to perch – they’re a whole atmosphere on their own.

The Douglas upholstery team enjoyed the challenge of this fully custom build that let them test their creativity and craftsmanship.

Collaboration Brings the Magic

This was a project that pushed the envelope in all the best ways – and we were stoked to be involved.

The Douglas team would like to offer a big thanks to Mix’d Cocktail Bar for bringing the vision, and Simkin Construction for the collaboration and the solid build. The end result is a fresh, flexible, and ultra-fun hospitality space that’s already turning heads for all the right reasons.
