Clean lines, super smooth and oh so architectural. This Havelock North home shows what can be achieved with consultation, custom design, and a penchant for louvred style.

An outdoor room showing louvre roof, panels and outdoor setting with pool views

Havelock North, Hawke’s Bay, NZ

Our clients in Havelock North were looking for an outdoor room to complete their backyard space to perfection. While louvre roofs had caught their eye initially, they were also looking for clever screen, shelter and shade features that would make the most of the space and suit their aesthetic.

Kindly they have allowed us to share photos of their space, to help others in their decision-making and show what is possible.

The Louvre Roof

A NZ Louvres roof was chosen due to its high quality, clean lines and its ability for the structure to be customised.

The 23 square metre space needed to include room for outdoor heaters, as well as outdoor dining and a casual seating area. It also needed to maintain a feeling of light, while being able to be closed in when needed.

The Screens

The requirement was for the views to the outdoors and pool area to be maximised for visual flow, while maintaining a feeling of privacy on the modest, well-utilised section size.

During consultation with the client, we were tasked with designing a screen system that achieved this brief, and provided flexible weather protection and enjoyment of natural light.

Custom powder-coating of both the louvre roof, louvres and Ziptrak® screen aluminium achieved a seamless look with the home’s joinery.

Slate was the colour of choice for the mesh Ziptrak® screens, which offered a nice tie-in stylistically. Being dark in colour they would also allow for a greater visibility to the outdoors when down (with the added privacy benefits).

The custom-design of the ‘walls’ utilises a winning combination of Ziptrak® screens and NZ Louvres’ Louvre Panels. The pairing allows for flexibility in light, shade and style.

The Ziptrak® blinds were fabricated locally in our workshop and custom-powdercoated by our friends at Pacific Powdercoating. The Vertical Louvre Panels were fabricated by NZ Louvres Cambridge alongside the Louvre Roof.

Careful design and placement of the blinds system by the Douglas team have enabled a seamless block look from the outside fascia. An effort which aided in respecting the architectural lines and style of the building.

On the narrow sides of the structure, pelmets were mounted on the exterior, enabling more space within the enclosure.

The customisation available with the NZ Louvres and our design team is one compelling plus side to this product.

The area had to be toasty warm and so we custom designed the NZ Louvres roof and Ziptrak® screen placements, including hidden custom brackets to fit two premium outdoor heaters tidily within the structure. As can be seen in the photos, the heaters look like they just belong there.

Louvre Panels were added for both design aesthetic and to let louvred light in or out at various times of the day.

Additionally LED strip lighting was included, all wired in and ready to enjoy of an evening.

The client was delighted with the result and has provided feedback on how much they enjoy using the space. We’re stoked with how it turned out – great teamwork and nicely executed by the Douglas install team. Nice work guys!
