CLASSIC POP-TOP GETS A NEW LEASE ON LIFE

Retro pop top caravan reupholstery

Learning can be a steep curve, but it can also be a lot of fun according to Douglas fabricator Jason Muir, who got the opportunity to do a complete refurbishment of this classic baby blue pop-top camper.

The Project

The owners of this classic pop-top had done a lot of work on the inside but the canvas was in a bad state of repair, and needed a completely new skin.

After talking with the customers about their vision, staff helped them choose a durable quality canvas that would fit the retro look of their pop-top.

Jason, who recently completed his apprenticeship at Douglas, worked on the project with the support and instruction of Matt, an experienced fabricator.  Jason enjoyed the challenge of a big project and loved the learning how to do the 3-way windows, with insect mesh, clear PVC and the canvas ‘curtains.’

Matt helped with the cream ‘eyebrows’ over the windows and some of the more challenging zippers.

The Finish

Jason is most proud of the technical aspect of the work like figuring out how to make everything workable. He was pleased with the tidy finish that he achieved at the end. When asked it turns out; “The best part was the customer reaction, how stoked they were was really great. That’s what makes the job for me.”

The pop-top owners were equally thrilled with the workmanship saying; “We were absolutely delighted… the attention to detail, everything precise, just as we like it.”

A great result for the customers, our up-and-coming fabricator Jason and of course the vintage blue pop-top.
